Important Announcements from the Guidance Department

If you were awarded a scholarship at Awards Night, it is vitally important that you write a thank you note to the organization or family who provided the scholarship. Please do this without delay.

First Coast Technical College
For those of you are still trying to figure out what you want to do after you graduate, don’t forget First Coast Technical College. They have lots of great programs, many of them offered on the Palatka Campus on Comfort Road. Programs available are  Agriscience and Natural Resources which includes Irrigation Operations, Landscape management, nursery Management, Pest Control Operations, Sports and Recreational Turf Management; Business Technology which includes Administrative Assistant, Medical Administrative Assistant, Network Support Services and PC Support; Early Childhood Education, Health, which includes Medical Assisting, Nursing Assistant, and Patient Care Technician; and Industrial Education which includes Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Heating, Welding, Automotive Service Technology, Commercial Art Technology, Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, Printing and Graphic Arts and Refrigeration Technology. Thee is something there for everyone and they offer scholarships for each program.

First Coast Technical College Scholarships

FCTC
has scholarships for each of its programs. You will need to apply to First coast Tech, have a 2.5 or higher GPA, and a recommendation from a teacher and your guidance counselor. Pick up an application in Guidance.


Youth Education Summit
Sophomores and Juniors: If you are interested in attending the 12th Annual Youth Education Summit this summer where you will learn about The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the federal government and the importance of being active in civic affairs, please come to Guidance for an information sheet. YES participants also compete for a total of $30,000 in college scholarships.

Clay Electrict Youth Tour
Students who plan to participate in the Clay Electric Youth Tour to Washington may pick-up the topic for the essay from Mrs. Lingle in Guidance.

Aveda Institute

Those of you who are interested in pursuing your education after you graduate, but not at a college or university, check out the Aveda Institute at www.avedaflorida.com. You can obtain state liscensing and certification in Cosmetology and Spa Therapy and Esthetics and Massage. They also have programs for Makeup Artist, Manicurist, and Fashion Photo Stylist.


Horatio Alger Scholarship
The Horatio Alger Scholarship Program seeks to assist students who have: demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education; and a desire to contribute to society. Need a Lift?
This book provided by the American Legion lists scholarships, loans, and grants for which students may qualify. We only have one copy for you to look through, but it is also available online at www.needalift.org. If you would like to
see th e book, please see Mrs. Crawford.

2008-09 Academic Scholarship
 You must have a minimum ACT composite score of 23 or SAT score of 1080 and a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.2. You will also need an SJRCC Admission application and the Academic Scholarship application. Deadline for returning to the college is May 1, 2008.

University of South Florida
If you are a minority student planning to attend the University of South Florida in the fall you may be eligible to apply for one of the following scholarships:
Brighthouse Minority Scholarship for $1,000. This scholarship provides opportunities for academically talented students to study at USF.
The Robert Louis Allen Endowed Memorial Scholarship for $1,000. This is for an academically talented student majoring in Mass Communications, the premedical sciences or nursing at USF.
Ruth and Jerry Bell Endowed Scholarship for $1,000. This is for an academically talented African-American freshman studying at USF.
Catherine and John Lott Brown Endowed Scholarship for $1,000. This is for academically talented minority students studying at USF.
The Ivory Club Scholarship for $500. Preference is given to individuals who are African descent.
