Guidance and Parent Conferences
We always encourage parents and students to first communicate directly with teachers when they have a concern. This can head off many problems. Email is an excellent option for reaching teachers. All PHS teachers have email that they check daily. A teacher's email address is their last name and first initial followed by @palatkahighschool.org. A list of teacher's names is posted on the Faculty/Staff web page. Otherwise you should contact your child's guidance counselor. Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled through the Guidance office Tues., Wed. & Thurs. between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Student Extracurricular Involvement: Sports and Programs
Sports - To be eligible to try out for a sport, a student must have a 2.0 GPA and have completed and turned in necessary paperwork.
Programs/Clubs
Students who are involved in extracurricular activities at their high school tend to be happier and they generally do better academically in school.
New Attendance Policy
Please be aware of the new attendance policy in Putnam County this year. At PHS, all our classes are on a semester basis (.50 credit), so our students will be allowed to miss 8 days of class within a semester. This is regardless of whether those absences are excused or unexcused; however, when an absence is unexcused, students are not allowed to get credit for make up work for that day. So it is in the best interest of student’s grades, for them to get absences excused (three days in which to bring in note.)
Students with 9 or more absences in a semester, who are passing for the semester, could possibly loose the credit. At the end of the semester, students with 9 or more absences, will be administered a mastery exam for all courses for which they were absent 9 or more days. Students must score a grade of 70% or higher on the exam to receive the credit for the class.
